Battle looms as industry transforms - by Gordon Hamilton, Vancouver Sun
PORT ALBERNI - Mayor Ken McRae is not afraid to speak his mind but even so, he admits it's unusual for a mayor to be standing on the only highway leading out of town to support a blockade against log exports.
'You can see all that beautiful fir on those trucks. It's leaving here; it's our most valuable timber and it's going to Washington State. It's going to Eureka, California,' McRae said as he gestured to the line of logging trucks pulled off to the side of the road. Local workers waving banners stood in front of them, preventing them from leaving the valley. 'We can beat the Americans any time. We just need a chance to do something with all that fir here.'------------------------------------------- posted 7:25 AM :: reference link ::
