    The seemingly endless reports of cost overruns, widespread corruption and shoddy construction have made the Big Dig a national joke and a classic example of big government gone awry.

    But politicians weren't laughing Tuesday after Milena Del Valle died when roofing panels weighing about three tons crumbled and fell onto the car she was riding in, killing her instantly. The senseless tragedy occurred in the Ted Williams Tunnel, part of the $14.6 billion Big Dig boondoggle.

    Big Dig Problems May Date Back to 1999 - ABC News
    BOSTON Jul 13, 2006 (AP)— Contractors knew as early as 1999 that there were problems with some of the bolts attaching massive concrete panels to the ceiling of the Big Dig highway tunnel where a woman was crushed by 12 tons of falling concrete, Massachusetts' attorney general said.
