Girls like building, too - Kristi Haunfelder, Lake Country Reporter, WI
'We're still working to get everyone to understand that everyone can do everything. Women can do the same things as men,' Stempski said.
Part of that includes encouraging children to work with their hands. One is the Block-Kids competition, where first- through sixth-graders use interlocking blocks and other items, such as string, to build structures.
'Other than the stuff you see on TV, kids don't get exposed to construction much,' Jaske said.
Companies join together for events to give kids a chance to climb in equipment such as a truck or a backhoe and see the controls, Jaske said.
'We want to educate kids (girls and boys) that construction work is just as much fun and they can make more money sometimes,' Stempski said. 'Some finish carpenters make $40 an hour. You can make money working with your hands.'
