Manitoba electrical workers upset over slack apprentice supervision - CP/Daily Commercial News
Unionized electrical workers are threatening to haul the Manitoba government before the labour board if it doesn’t start cracking down on what it says are dangerous workplaces.
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers organizer Russ Shewchuk says the province isn’t enforcing a law requiring apprentices be supervised by a journeyman or expert electricians on a one-to-one ratio.
Shewchuk says they’re looking to emulate a tactic used by Ontario electricians three years ago.
They went to their labour board arguing that an inspector had been too soft on a company in Smith Falls that hired 10 unlicensed labourers to do electrical work on a new high school.
The labour board adjudicator ruled the issue was outside his mandate, but the Ontario government later beefed up its enforcement measures.
