Many high school students hope construction is their meal ticket - By Jim McGaw, Warren Times Gazette, RI
Bob Baldwin, workforce development coordinator for RIBA, said there's always been a high demand for well-paid construction workers, but many high schools aren't doing enough to educate their students about that career option.
He applauds programs such as the Homebuilders and the East Providence Career and Technical Center, a regional vocational school, but said too many school administrators and guidance counselors are pushing college as the only choice for graduates. Back in his day, he said, your career options were to join the military, learn a trade or go to college.
'Somewhere along the line in the last 30 years or so, 'go to college' has become the holy grail. No one knows why. But tragically, public high schools gauge their success by the percentage of kids who go to college. That's insane,' Mr. Baldwin said.------------------------------------------- posted 6:57 AM :: reference link ::
