Carpenters leader hammers at other unions' attitude - By Repps Hudson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MO
What's happened to the union movement?
Twenty-five years ago, we did 28 percent of all the construction. Today it's 13 percent. Now the heads of the building trades, they're ecstatic because %u2026 we've been losing about a percent a year.
So the bleeding is stanched a little?
It's all value driven. Why would you, as an individual, give me $10 and I, in exchange, give you nothing? Why would you do that? That's what unions have been demanding for years. Give me my money, and I'll give you a little bit back. I'll give you a little bit of work back, and I'll give you a little bit of this and a little bit of that. And we just screwed it up.
In my humble opinion, in our construction trades in St. Louis, you're not going to find a better-trained work force in the country. That's not the final equation. You can be the best-trained, safest worker in the world, but when you go on the job, you've got to work. I don't want your lazy ass there if you're not working. We've got unions in this town that are just adamant that they're going to work four or five hours a day. You get paid for eight.------------------------------------------- posted 6:07 AM :: reference link ::
