Dueling construction projects are also competing for limited space just south of here, in front of the Air Canada Centre. Six cranes like giant long-necked birds crowd the CN Tower, a kind of prehistoric scene on a recent misty morning. Four are erecting the Suites at Maple Leaf Square, an office, shopping and condo project; the others are Menkes Developments Ltd. cranes building a new Toronto headquarters for Telus, the telephone company. But today it is raining, and Doug Smith, the Menkes construction manager, has called off the job.
