Paint Misbehavin': The story behind artists who use the streets as their canvas - Vanessa Farquharson, National Post, Canada
This scene from the National Film Board's documentary Roadsworth: Crossing the Line perfectly captures the frustrating irony that plagues today's street artists: A renowned professional such as Roadsworth can have his work legitimately commissioned by museums and galleries across North America and Europe, but might very well end up in jail the next day for doing identical but unsolicited work, just around the corner.
Even in his hometown, there's no more leniency granted than to any other teenager running around with a can of spray paint: Four years ago, Roadsworth was arrested and prosecuted by the City of Montreal, charged with 85 counts of public mischief and slapped with $250,000 in fines as well as a criminal record - all for turning a right-hand turn lane into a zipper and painting vines around a few traffic dividers.
