White House, Carpenters Level Democrats' Blue-Collar Base Union President Doug McCarron doesn't want to be an "adjunct of one particular party," says Monte Byers, a political strategist for the union, known formally as the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Mr. McCarron adds many Republicans on Capitol Hill are "friends" of the union, and backing them is in "our members' interest." The union even endorsed the re-election campaign of the president's brother, Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida, and expects to work on his behalf during the race.
