Asbestos talks make progress If the talks resolve a number of major issues, the legislation would settle damage suits that are backlogged in many courts. An estimated 700,000 Americans have filed legal claims for asbestos injuries, including 100,000 in each of the last two years. The litigation has hit 8,400 companies and driven 67 of them into filing for bankruptcy protection, according to the Rand Institute for Civil Justice.
Public health experts estimate that as many as half a million Americans, mainly workers, will die of asbestos-related lung diseases before the microscopic fibers' final toll is counted in the coming decades.
