The Nation Some time next week the Republican House will vote on the so-called energy bill -- a gargantuan mess that has been kicked around ever since Dick Cheney and Enron collaborated on the President's National Energy Policy. "The bill would do almost nothing to improve energy efficiency, save oil, or advance clean, renewable energy sources," says the Natural Resources Defense Council. "It would, however, provide billions of taxpayer dollars to the oil, coal and nuclear industries -- even though energy companies are currently making record-breaking profits -- and create massive subsidies to log our national forests." It would also demand, once again, that the Alaskan wildlife refuge be disposed of at ExxonMobil's pleasure. (Talk about the bad idea that just won't stay dead!)
