Native bands claiming proceeds of tariff by Gordon Hamilton
The U.S. has collected $1.5 billion in softwood duties and 50 First Nations in northern B.C. say some of it belongs to them.
"There was trespass into individual nations' territories and then it was illegally logged. We are asking the United States to send back the money to the rightful owners, which is the First Nations," said Justa Monk, co-chair of the Northwest Tribal Treaty Nations.
"If they want the money, they ought to get in line," said John Ragosta, legal counsel for the Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports.
