Davies: Ironworker who saved Farmer's Market Thanks to Mike Davies, the new Farmer's Market at Suburban Square is no longer a disaster waiting to happen.
"For some unknown reasons, carpenters have been welding plates that will hold a very heavy roof system.
Valley Forge inspection service came to inspect the welds of these plates. The welding was immediately stopped by the inspector. What the inspector found was shocking.
'The plates that were being welded are about 10 inches long, requiring vertical welds on both sides. Instead, the two welders were welding down passes, which is illegal and a very weak weld. Also, the welding equipment they were using was something you use in auto bodywork. They [had] over 100 plates completed this way."
A call left with the Carpenters' Union for comment was not returned.------------------------------------------- posted 12:58 PM :: reference link ::
