U.S. chops down new softwood lumber proposal A new draft proposal that could have ended the softwood lumber dispute between Canada and the U.S. has been chopped down by industry officials in the States, according to The Globe and Mail.
The change came last night, when Canada was accused of not compromising enough by the Washington-based Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, The Globe said.
That's when Canada ended discussions, according to Sebastien Theberge, a spokesman for International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew.
"The U.S. and Canadian negotiators have received new demands coming from the coalition, which were excessive to Canada, and we have terminated the discussions," he told the newspaper.
