But after two and a half decades at the negotiation table, most recently last summer, Hargrove remains a firm believer that unions and companies should maintain an arm's-length relationship and never get too cozy.
His remarks come as the UAW begins to establish its identity under the Gettelfinger administration and craft a deal in an era of intensifying competition. Talks are to kick off on Wednesday.
"We've never accepted the logic that helping the corporations helps the union," Hargrove said. "We bargain based on the best interests of our members."
