Bush Salutes Workers on Labor Day Weekend: "This long weekend is a well-deserved reward for the millions of men and women who make this economy go,'' Bush said.
But although Bush praised the nation's work force, his administration has put forward several proposals that have angered unions.
The Labor Department wants to overhaul overtime pay rules, and says more than 1 million low-income workers would become eligible for such pay. But about 640,000 white-collar workers could lose the extra cash.
Organized labor is upset over the administration's decision to allow private companies to bid for up to 850,000 government jobs - nearly half the federal civilian work force.
Guardian-US Embassy to remain closed on Monday In 1894, the first Monday in September was established as a Federal Holiday in the United States. Today in the United States, Labour Day is viewed by many as the unofficial end of summer, and the beaches and other popular resort areas are packed with people enjoying one last three-day weekend.
To mark the occasion last year, President Bush met with Carpenters’ Union in Pittsburgh where he picnicked with members of one of the largest construction unions, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. He is expected to participate in a similar gathering this year.
