AFL-CIO’s Two Biggest Unions Give Dean Strong Boost for Democratic Nomination By Harry Kelber
Howard Dean, former Vermont governor, clinched his position as front-runner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination by winning the endorsement of the AFL-CIO’s two biggest, politically powerful unions: the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), with 1.6 million members and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) with 1.5 million members.
