6000 Workers ring in New Year with new rights as CUPW members CUPW, Canada NewsWire
The CUPW negotiated employee status for Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) as of January 2, 2004 during its last round of bargaining. RSMC used to work as contractors for Canada Post. They had no rights, no benefits and inhumane working conditions.
'Rural and suburban mail carrier have been working towards this day for at least half a century,' said Alice Boudreau, CUPW's national representative responsible for RSMC.
'We are now entitled to basic rights, such as coverage under worker's compensation, and we have a contract that provides clear rules and improved wages,' said Boudreau.
