Reputed mobster sentenced in scheme By TIMOTHY O'CONNOR
Crea, 56, admitted Oct. 1 that he was involved in a Lucchese scheme that squeezed the Scalamandre Construction Co. for $40,000 in payoffs each year from 1994 until 2001. In exchange, the company received assurances of labor peace from the mobsters.
The Luccheses used part of the payoff to grease union officials' palms so they would look the other way as Scalamandre hired non-union labor at lower wages and no benefits for construction contracts the company won through low-ball bids, federal prosecutors said.
