B.C. labour chief sounds alarm over proposed WCB changes By STEVE MERTL, Canadian Press
VANCOUVER -- The B.C. government wants to transfer responsibility for the health and safety of energy industry employees away from the Workers' Compensation Board to the provincial Oil and Gas Commission, the B.C. Federation of Labour says.
Federation president Jim Sinclair flourished a sheaf of leaked e-mails yesterday that he said shows that three outside law firms have been engaged to draft legislation to make the change by summer 2005.
Meanwhile, the Energy and Mines Ministry would also work to identify existing WCB health and safety regulations causing problems for the oil and gas sector so changes can be made, one e-mail says.
But a ministry official said there are no plans to transfer health and safety responsibility away from the WCB.------------------------------------------- posted 8:27 AM :: reference link ::
