Building Tradesman Bemoan Applicants' Lack of Knowledge, Scarcity By Debra Pressey, The News-Gazette
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Ask Dan McCall how prepared he finds applicants for apprenticeship openings at the local bricklayers union, and he'll tell you at least half of them don't have a clue about what kind of work they'd be doing.
"I think if I was applying for a career, I'd want to know a little bit of what it's about," said McCall, the president of Bricklayers Local 8 in Champaign.
It's a growing problem for the building trades as they try to replace aging members approaching retirement. Many of today's young applicants know little about the trades or how to meet the rigorous requirements the unions have for apprenticeship openings.
What's more, McCall said, minority candidates which the unions are eager to hire are scarce.
