The rat patrol: Union protests contractor over out-of-state workers By Cathy Flynn
Unemployed local tradesmen say they smell a rat at the construction site of the Next Generation Children's Center.
Yesterday, accompanied by a menacing-looking 12-foot inflatable rat, members of the Carpenter's Union Local 475 demonstrated against Procon, the New Hampshire-based general contractor for the project.
The demonstrators said Procon is currently using non-union labor from New Hampshire to lay the foundation. The out-of-state workers are undercutting local workers' wages and benefits, protesters said.
While the picketing was peaceful, it did slow down traffic along Main Street during the busy morning rush hour, as motorists and school buses slowed down to look at the red-eyed, fanged rodent on the corner.
"We've got a whole family of 'em," said one picketer of the rat, which for over 100 years has been organized labor's symbol of the non-union worker.
