Statement by UFW Co-Founder Dolores Huerta on Her Arrest Outside the Spa Casino Resort in Palm Springs SOURCE Dolores Huerta, PRNewswire
'Today over 200 people sent a clear signal about the importance of including worker protections for employees of the Agua Caliente Casinos in any new compact between the State and the Tribe. It is our sincere hope that Gov. Schwarzenegger will recognize that the only way to address discrimination and unfair treatment at the Agua Caliente casinos is in the gaming compact now being negotiated. The record of the Agua Caliente as an employer is deplorable. The casino disregards its responsibility to protect workers' rights and leaves taxpayers the bill for its employees' basic family healthcare benefits. Women and immigrant workers face especially harsh conditions. I was proud to join with the over 200 people who denounced the Agua Caliente's behavior -- and with the twenty-five who were arrested in an act of civil disobedience that was a courageous statement about the need for reform.'
