Carpenters union heats up campaign By Kathy Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal
Fewer than 100 employees at a couple of local companies have made the switch to union representation so far, industry sources say, but the way the carpenters union is going about it has local employers crying foul. Tactics range from pickets, name-calling and harassment to unfair labor charges, wage-and-hour complaints and legal changes that favor organized labor.
If the campaign goes on for much longer, at least one local employer expects to go out of business.
The aggressive approach also has spurred a jurisdictional fight with the Teamsters that's gone all the way up the organizations to Doug McCarron, president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, and Teamsters president James Hoffa.
Founded 120 years ago, the Carpenters Union is simply attempting to catch up with the times, said spokesman Paul Cohen.
New thinking: Local 46 has roughly 2,600 members in Greater Sacramento, many of them at large companies that include Hensel Phelps Construction Co., Roebbelen Contracting Inc. and McCarthy Building Cos. Inc., the top three general building contractors in the area.
