A trade for the future Grads and others turn to apprenticeships to find steady work By BRENT HUNSBERGER, Oregonian, OR
Tommy R. Taylor isn't planning to go to college, but he knows one thing for sure.
He doesn't want to end up working nights in a dirty, noisy aluminum smelter like his father, only to see the job vanish with Oregon's declining manufacturing base.
So, Taylor, who graduated June 5 from The Dalles High School, is considering a training path that few high school graduates pursue: a five-year apprenticeship as an electrician. In doing so, he represents the hope of a nationwide movement to lure younger workers into carpentry, plumbing and other trades that offer family wages and stable job outlooks.
