440,000 members in new union By Melvin N. Coffee, Chicago Daily Herald
If there's power in numbers, the newly merged UNITE HERE union of garment, hotel and restaurant workers is, as its leaders contend, on the verge of becoming an important player on critical labor, economic and political fronts.
At a convention in Chicago Thursday, representatives of the Union of Needletrades, Textiles and Industrial Employees and the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union voted unanimously to combine the two groups. The new union represents 440,000 active members and more than 400,000 retirees throughout North America.
