Carpenters, industry announce security screening pilot program Newsday, NY
EDISON, N.J. -- The state carpenters union has joined operators of the state's nuclear plants and other sensitive facilities in announcing a program in which certain workers will be prescreened for security purposes.
Under the voluntary pilot program, about 100 union millwrights have agreed to be tested for drug use and to submit to criminal background checks and checks on their citizenship and immigration status.
Such screening of contractors is typically required before each job by operators of nuclear and electric plants, refineries, bridges and tunnels, manufacturing plants, said Philip E. Cooney, director of the New Jersey Carpenter Contractor Trust.
