Alabama man's workplace safety ideas gain momentum in Congress By JEFFREY McMURRAY, AP
More than 11 years after his son suffocated in a corn silo accident, Fairhope, Ala., resident Ron Hayes has pushed congressional Democrats and Republicans to the brink of compromise on a key provision of a workplace safety law.
Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., who for years has worked with Hayes to write a bill aimed at cracking down on safety negligence by employers, is now also endorsing Hayes' position that prosecutors should be armed with the threat of a felony conviction against willful violators.
"This is monumental," said Hayes, who formerly sat on the advisory panel overseeing the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. "Just having a felony charge out there is not going to make safety 100 times better, but it will take the people who are the worst offenders off the playing table, away from the work site."
