Union eyes Ontario Wal-Marts CBC Ottawa
"It's a starting point," says UFCW head Michael Fraser, "and I believe it will demonstrate to other Wal-Mart employees that if the people of Jonquière can stand up to this company, they can as well."
Fraser says there are a lot of disgruntled Wal-Mart employees.
With its foot in the door of the highly un-unionized Wal-Mart company, Fraser says UFCW Canada is looking to Ontario, which he sees as an important battleground.
But Andrew Pelletier, of Wal-Mart Canada, disputes the idea that workers are unhappy with their employer, or that the union accreditation in Quebec is part of anything larger.
"The Jonquière union situation is seen as a one-off, an isolated situation, that legal and labour experts don't see as leading to anything," said Pelletier.
