Worker: Scaffold was 'already shaking' By HOLLY EDWARDS, The Tennessean, TN
Still shaken and nursing an injured leg, James Lillard said yesterday that he knew something was wrong Friday morning as soon as he and five co-workers began climbing a scaffold at a Broadway apartment building site.
''As we went up, it was already shaking and we didn't know why,'' said Lillard, 52, in a telephone interview from his Dew Street home in east Nashville. ''I said, 'Man, what's wrong with this scaffold?' ''
Lillard said several workers questioned the safety of the scaffolding but were told by their supervisor to climb it. He said the crew's supervisor was Brian Owen, 24, of Lyles, Tenn., who was killed in the accident.
''We had to do what the superintendent told us to do,'' Lillard said.
Minutes after he began climbing, Lillard said, he heard a crashing sound above him and saw the scaffold begin to collapse. He said he rode a wave of metal and wood about 20 feet down, and a wooden step board landed on one of his legs.
