Facing sanctions, carpenters union agrees to stop disputed picketing By Kathy Robertson, Sacramento Business Journal
The settlement has an unusually broad reach, observers say. Normally the board stops illegal action by a union against one employer. This deal applies to the union's dealings with all Greater Sacramento employers and their customers.
'It is very, very broad,' said Joseph Norelli, regional attorney for the board in San Francisco. 'We only seek that kind of broad order when we have recidivism and we've had recidivism with the Carpenters in recent years.'
'Carpenters Local 46 consistently denied -- and continues to deny -- it did anything wrong, but decided it was not in anybody's best interest to engage in protracted litigation,' said union spokesman Paul Cohen.
The regulator's action comes more than 18 months after pickets first showed up at Anthony & Sons General Contractors Inc., Petrini Van and Storage and other area employers. The demonstrations were part of an aggressive campaign to gain union recognition that has led to payroll audits, fines, legal fees and lost business at these and other local businesses.
'It's a big win for ASI, Petrini and all other companies the carpenters (may) target in Sacramento,' said Brian Crone, a Sacramento lawyer who represents the two local companies. 'It's as broad an order as we ever hoped to get.'------------------------------------------- posted 9:43 AM :: reference link ::
