It's official: IWA-Canada has merged with United Steelworkers of America CBC News
The long history of one of Canada's best-known private sector unions has come to a halt with the Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers union officially merging with the United Steelworkers of America.
The merger of the two unions, which takes effect Wednesday, creates the largest private sector union in Canada with 250,000 members and a Canada-U.S. membership of about 650,000. The IWA members had previously voted 60 per cent in favour of the merger, IWA spokesman Scott Lunny said Monday following a meeting of the executive of the two unions.
The IWA as the union name ceases to exist but it will be affiliated with the Steelworkers through what will be called the IWA Council, said Norman Rivard, president of the IWA before the merger. He will now serve as chairman of the council.
