Labor Day LaborArts
What came to be known as the first Labor Day parade was held in New York City's Union Square on September 5, 1882. More than 30,000 members of the Knights of Labor and craft unions marched up Broadway and Fifth Avenue, demanding an eight-hour workday.
We present here a sampling of photographs and other images from Labor Day Parades many decades later. Almost all are from New York City, though we continue to collect material from elsewhere. Many of the issues from 1882 were still relevant in all locations, though this was less the case for the unionized workers who were marching than for the many more unorganized workers who are not well represented.
