State of labor on Labor Day By JOE LIVERNOIS, Monterey County Herald
Central Coast labor leaders don't like it much that the big sporting event of the Labor Day weekend, The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, was sponsored by Wal-Mart.
With its no-union stance, the retailing giant is one of the labor movement's most vilified adversaries.
'I just about went through the ceiling when I heard about it,' said Ron Chesshire, president of Carpenters Local Union 605 in Marina. 'It's Wal-Mart on the Monterey Peninsula. On the Labor Day holiday.'
But other than that distraction, Chesshire and other labor leaders say this Labor Day weekend the local labor movement is alive, well and kicking.------------------------------------------- posted 8:02 AM :: reference link ::
