Slippery floors. Dangerous machinery. Bigots. Sexual harassers. America has decreed its workforce must be protected from all of these. But what about bullies? As a country, we have started to protect our children from this terror -- but what about employees?
On June 1st, 2004 while America was focused upon the Middle East, the Canadian province of Quebec, the next "state" to the north of New York and New England, instituted a law to protect employees from workplace psychological harassment -- bullying.
What is workplace psychological harassment and why is America falling behind in protecting its employees? First, it is important to size up the problem. According to the Workplace Bullying and Trauma Institute in Bellingham, Washington, bullying affects one in six U.S. employees, and is more common than sexual harassment.
