Structure complete San Francisco Examiner
In keeping with an old tradition among ironworkers, the men straddling the building's steel shell then 'topped off' the building's new frame by unfurling an American flag. The ceremony can be traced back to 700 A.D. in Scandinavia, where the custom of raising an evergreen tree was a popular way to signal the completion of a structure, according to the 'Ironworker' magazine.
