Winter proves the most dangerous season for those working on the rivers By Virginia Linn, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Some industry figures estimate the death rate of tow workers could be as high as 72 out of 100,000, or roughly equal to the commercial fishing industry -- the second most dangerous profession after the timber industry, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A breakdown of towing casualties indicates that 62 percent are caused by human error.
