Mine rescue should be expanded not cut says Steelworkers' Fraser Canada NewsWire
The closure of the Kirkland Lake Mine Rescue Station is being proposed by the Mines Aggregates Safety and Health Association (MASHA), funded by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), which took over responsibility for mine safety from the Ministry of Labour a few years ago. If the closure goes ahead, the nearest rescue facility with specialized equipment will be a minimum of two hours away.
'Lives will certainly be lost if response time is delayed that much,' said Fraser. 'This is unacceptable and irresponsible on the part of MASHA. The community of Kirkland Lake deserves better.'------------------------------------------- posted 1:39 PM :: reference link ::
