Media Math - The case of the disappearing union membership. - by David Frank, Straight Goods, Canada
There was only one problem - the information in the news report was wrong.
The story was based on a Statistics Canada study published last month under the title 'Diverging Trends in Unionization'. It provided an analysis of union membership in Canada up to 2004, including the fact that membership has suffered a decline of about 7 percent since the early 1980s.
Among other things, the report found a big generation gap. In the over-44 age group, union membership is more than 41 percent, but in the under 25 age group, it is less than 14 percent.
At the same time, the gender gap has almost disappeared. In Canada there is now less than one half of one percent difference in the level of union membership between women and men.
