We don't need a trade war over lumber - Toronto Star, Canada Although it has repeatedly been unable to prove that Canadian softwood exports are subsidized or that they damage the United States industry, the solution Washington seeks is that Canada impose a tax on softwood lumber exported to the U.S., which would cause prices there to rise. 'The whole inane scheme,' The Wall Street Journal intoned, 'may well lead to a net reduction in employment in the U.S., because for every lumber and sawmill job there are about 25 Americans working in industries that depend on low-priced Canadian lumber as an input.'
