Fractured unions trying to maintain their local ties - By Niala Boodhoo, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
When the carpenters' union left, they had been excluded from participation in local AFL-CIO units. But doing the same for this group of dissidents could be crippling to many local groups -- in Miami-Dade County alone, about 40 percent of its 68,000 members belong to the dissident groups. In Palm Beach County, 12 percent of 50,000 members belong, and in Broward, 15 percent of 50,000 belong.
