Facility builds on carpentry's future - BY BARBARA MILLER, Patriot-News, PA
The union expects to train from 200 to 300 apprentices and journeymen a week at the 27,000-square-foot addition to the Heilmandale Road center, compared with 115 to 125 who are trained there now, said Robert Zukovich, instructor and coordinator.
The number of in-training carpenters sparked the need for a larger educational center. The trade is so popular because you can take the skills anywhere and the pay is good, apprentices said.
Caroline Spahr of Red Lion decided to enter the carpentry field after her four children grew up. Spahr, 44, is ending her third year as an apprentice and works in maintenance at Texaco's oil refinery in Delaware City, Del.
'I wanted a job that allowed me to travel, and I wanted to learn a trade,' she said.
