Wal-Mart trumpets efficiency appraisal - By ALEX DANIELS, Arkansas Democrat Gazette
Wal-Mart’s conference came the same week as the release of a DVD, Wal-Mart : The High Cost of Low Price, that alleges that Wal-Mart’s low-cost merchandise comes as a result of worker exploitation.
Speaking to reporters right before Wal-Mart’s presentation, members of Wakeupwalmart. com, a group backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers union, introduced the formation of Wal-Mart Workers of America, planned as a national association for current and former employees of the retailer. Its first move : Offering 50 uninsured Wal-Mart workers $ 200 in health-care money.
Paul Blank, Wakeupwalmart. com’s campaign director, would not disclose how much money the group had raised.
He argued that Wal-Mart, with $ 285 billion in annual revenue, offers meager wages and benefits to its employees. About 100, 000 employees don’t have health care at all, and many others depend on state and federal programs for health care, he said.
“Individually, it is hard to go against a $ 200 billion company,” Blank said. “By joining together, people have power.”
