Building boom, storm repairs spur need for skilled workers: - By Robin Benedick, South Florida Sun-Sentinel
To many young people, construction is dangerous and not at all glamorous. They don't want to invest years learning a trade with low starting pay when going to college is still the American dream.
David Svetlick, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 728 in Fort Lauderdale, said the key to getting more skilled workers is for school guidance counselors to identify students less likely to go to college and steer them into vocational classes.
'Years and years ago, when I got into apprenticeships, there were 600 applicants for 60 spots,' said Svetlick. 'Now we're lucky to get 60 applicants.'------------------------------------------- posted 8:30 AM :: reference link ::
