Using Shop Stewards For More Than Griveances - By Mark Gruenberg, PAI, ILCA Online In a major revision of its organizing focus, the AFL-CIO Executive Council told its 54 member unions to revise the duties of their 500,000 shop stewards, making them not just grievance handlers but campaigners for democracy. To accomplish that, the federation will develop a concise training package for its member unions and they in turn will be asked βto develop a plan to mobilize" the stewards in the cause β for both democracy in the workplace and the U.S. β said Communications Workers President Larry Cohen, AFL-CIO Organizing Committee chair.
