McCain Spars At AFL-CIO Meeting - by By Mark Gruenberg, PAI, ILCA Online
The 69-year-old war hero makes no bones about his ambitions for the GOP presidential nomination. He even joked about it when addressing the 2,000 delegates to the AFL-CIO Building Trades Legislative Conference in Washington on April 4 – before inviting “questions, comments and even insults” from the audience.
And McCain got an earful, including some boos, when he defended parts of the immigration legislation he’s now pushing through the Senate, and when he mentioned the Carpenters, praising their organizing in Arizona.
“Stop! Stop! I surrender!” McCain joked, holding up both arms, when he heard the reception his mention of the Carpenters, who are no longer in the BCTD, produced.
