Philly Unions to Expand Apprenticeships to Include Black High School Grads - By Patrice Gaines, Black America Web
Nevels, the multimillionaire founder and chairman of The Swarthmore Group, an independent investment and financial advisory firm that is one of the largest minority-owned firms in the country, credits his “parents’ union jobs” with giving him opportunities for a good future.
The new agreement will also give some trades people, who have been unable to enter union jobs before, immediate entrance into the union.
“Those who would get immediate entrance would be small contractors, minority- and women-owned companies. If they are certified at the school district of Philadelphia for capital programs, they will be admitted to the union trade, as well as the individuals who work for them. This could mean an immediate increase in income and benefits, health care and otherwise for some people,” said Nevels.
