After 'rocky' start, revamped unions rev up political activity - By Jill Lawrence, USA TODAY AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, who warned last year that divisions would weaken the labor movement, now says the two sides are discussing 'the parameters of a national campaign' after 'a very solid, united effort' last fall in Virginia, New Jersey and California. As the AFL-CIO imploded, unions helped elect Democratic governors in Virginia and New Jersey.
