    The union's involvement is a pilot project, which Heslop says it plans to build upon.

    The idea came out of bargaining with the three North American auto makers. The union negotiated for a leave of absence for any skilled-trade worker who wanted to take time off to do relief work.

    Union president Buzz Hargrove says the union will pay for living quarters, food and travel expenses for the 30 workers.
