Log export ban could save sawmills, union says - By Grant Warkentin, Campbell River Mirror, Canada
With a provincial review of raw log exports looming, the United Steelworkers union is taking the opportunity to criticize TimberWest.
Bob Matters, union spokesman, said the union representing Vancouver Island forestry workers is concerned that TimberWest is exporting logs that could be milled in communities such as Campbell River.
“It’s being exported because B.C, firms have not invested in the mills needed to process it,” he said in a news release. “Add to this the exports of logs by other firms, as well as those companies’ investments outside the province, and you can see that our future is rapidly being shipped away for short-term profits.”------------------------------------------- posted 5:50 AM :: reference link ::
